This session describes Factual’s recent results in releasing an OpenStreetMap-based geocoder. We are not alone in this kind of endeavor – everyone and their brother has built one or is planning to – but this session presents a dual view from the Product and Engineering sides. The engineering discussion will look at how we achieved low latency with a focus on indexing. The product side will discuss the requirements that drove the product (reverse only, street numbers are a P2). Taken together they will illustrate a challenging but ultimately successful use case of OSM that will prove of interest for experts and novices both.
